Formulation analysis — not personally used

A low-foam gel cleanser built on a cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine and sodium lauroyl sarcosinate base, with three ceramides, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid carried along to limit the stripped feeling that oily-skin cleansers usually leave behind.

Our verdict

For oily and combination skin this is the cleanser to buy: a low-foam, fragrance-free gel with ceramides and niacinamide that removes sebum and sunscreen without the tight after-feel of a classic foaming wash. If your skin feels dry or tight after washing, the hydrating version of the same line is the better version of this product for you.

Answer three quiet questions and we will place this decision inside a full morning and evening routine for your skin — in order, with what to skip.

What it does well

Cleans thoroughly on oily skin, fragrance-free, and cheap per wash.

Where it falls short

Dry and reactive skin will find it clarifying, and it treats nothing.

How we assessed this product

Maria Alejandra has not used this product herself, so there are no wear or results claims here. This is an independent formulation analysis: we read the full INCI list, check the disclosed active concentration and vehicle, and cross-check each active against peer-reviewed dermatology literature and the consensus positions of dermatology bodies. We note fragrance and common sensitizers, packaging suitability for light- or air-sensitive actives, and price per use. Claims the brand has not substantiated are reported as claims. Nothing here is sponsored or gifted, and no commission changes a verdict.

Key ingredients

Ceramides NP, AP, EOP
Present at rinse-off contact times, so their role is to reduce lipid loss during washing rather than to deposit a lasting barrier layer.
Niacinamide
Included in the base; studied for barrier support, though contact time in a cleanser is short, so treat it as a bonus rather than the reason to buy.
Hyaluronic acid
Humectant that keeps the after-feel from tightening on normal to combination skin.

Texture and finish

Clear gel that turns to a light, loose foam. It rinses fast and leaves skin matte but not squeaky.

Is CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser good for your skin type?

It suits oily, combination and acne-prone skin, where the surfactant system removes sebum and sunscreen without a stripped after-feel. Dry, mature or reactive skin usually does better with the hydrating cream cleanser in the same line.

It suits you if

  • Your skin is oily or combination and normal cleansers leave you shiny by midday
  • You want a fragrance-free daily wash that removes sunscreen with a second cleanse
  • You are acne-prone and want no actives in the cleansing step

Skip it if

  • Your skin is dry or tight after washing — the hydrating version suits you better
  • You want a cleanser that treats acne on its own
  • You dislike foaming textures

Pros

  • Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic labeled
  • Rinses clean without a stripped after-feel on oily skin
  • Large pump sizes keep the cost per wash very low

Cons

  • Too clarifying for dry or reactive skin in winter
  • No exfoliating or acne actives — it is a wash, nothing more
  • The pump can dispense more than you need

What I'd buy instead

If this one is not the right fit, these are the products I would look at next, and the reason for each.

Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser
If the foaming version leaves your skin tight, this non-foaming, fragrance-free wash removes far less lipid while still cleaning properly.
Paula's Choice CLEAR Pore Normalizing Cleanser
A better choice when you want a small amount of salicylic acid in the cleansing step rather than a completely inactive wash.

The complaints people actually make

These are the recurring criticisms in published customer reviews, with what the formula explains about each one.

"It dried my skin out."
The surfactant blend is built for sebum. On dry or winter skin that same efficiency removes more lipid than you can replace, which reads as tightness. The hydrating cleanser is the same brand logic with a non-foaming base.
"It did not clear my acne."
It is not an acne treatment. There is no benzoyl peroxide and no salicylic acid — the acne work belongs to the treatment step that follows.

How to use it

  1. 1Use a dime-sized amount on damp skin, morning and night.
  2. 2At night, use it as the second step after an oil or balm if you wear sunscreen or makeup.
  3. 3Rinse with lukewarm water and apply moisturizer while skin is still damp.

Where it fits in a routine

The cleansing step for oily and combination routines, morning and evening, ahead of any treatment step.

Frequently asked

Is CeraVe Foaming Facial Cleanser good for acne-prone skin?
It is a reasonable daily base for acne-prone skin because it is fragrance-free and rinses clean, but it contains no acne actives. Pair it with a treatment step such as adapalene or benzoyl peroxide chosen with your clinician.
Foaming or hydrating — which CeraVe cleanser should I use?
Foaming for oily and combination skin, hydrating for dry, mature or reactive skin. Many people use the foaming one in summer and the hydrating one in winter.
Does it remove sunscreen?
It removes most chemical sunscreens on its own. For water-resistant or mineral SPF, use an oil or balm first and follow with this as the second cleanse.
