Credentials at a glance

Written and edited by
I’m Maria Alejandra, the founder, researcher and editor of Lumen Ritual. I set the research direction, the creative vision and the editorial standards, and I do the writing and fact-checking myself. Tools may assist research and drafting — literature searches, link checks, layout, formatting. I review the evidence and the final language before anything is published. There is no anonymous content team.
Area of expertise
I read full INCI lists, compare formulations across price tiers, and translate peer-reviewed dermatology reviews and regulatory guidance into routines people can keep. I also originate the concepts behind every tool and guide here and direct the creative work — the brand, the photography and the page design are mine.
Not a clinician
I do not claim medical or dermatology qualifications. Nothing here diagnoses or treats a condition, and persistent skin problems belong with a healthcare provider.
Independence
I fund Lumen Ritual myself. No sponsored placements, no gifted-for-coverage products, no brand review before publication. Commission never sets the order of the picks.
Sources used
I use peer-reviewed dermatology literature, professional body consensus statements, ingredient monographs, sunscreen and cosmetic regulatory guidance, and manufacturer formulation data.
Review cadence
I review each core skin-type and concern guide at least once every 12 months and sooner when material evidence, safety guidance or a featured formula changes. I correct verified errors in place and update the page’s review date.

Linen notebook, reading glasses, tea and two unlabeled skincare bottles on a cream desk

Welcome to Skin Care Routine, created by Lumen Ritual. This site was created to help people build simple, personalized skincare routines without the overwhelm or hype. We believe most people get better results with a clear 3–5 step routine they can actually stick to, rather than complicated 10-step regimens.

The Quiz is a tool built with AI. Each answer narrows the recommendation set so the routine keeps only the steps that earn their place. The guides alongside it explain the reasoning, so you can see why a step is there before you keep it.

All recommendations are for educational purposes only and are based on general skincare principles. They are not medical advice.

Lumen Ritual exists because skincare advice is overwhelming. Ten-step regimens, conflicting ingredient claims, and hundreds of near-identical bottles make it hard to know what you actually need. We built a two-minute quiz that reads your skin type, your concerns, and how much time you want to spend, then composes a morning and evening routine of only the steps that earn their place.

Who is behind Lumen Ritual

My name is Maria Alejandra and I am the founder and editor of Lumen Ritual. I write, research and fact-check every page on this site myself. There is no anonymous content team, no parent company, no sponsor, and no brand with editorial input.

I started this project after years of buying the wrong products on the strength of marketing copy. What changed my skin was learning to read an ingredient list and to keep a routine short enough to actually follow. I am not a dermatologist and I never present myself as one. What I bring is patience with the primary literature, a habit of comparing full INCI lists rather than front labels, and a refusal to recommend anything I would not use on my own face.

Where a claim comes from published evidence I say so, and where the evidence is thin or mixed I say that too. If I get something wrong, email me and I will correct it in place. The standards behind every page are written out on the editorial policy page.

Why this site exists

I built Lumen Ritual for the version of me who stood in a pharmacy aisle holding two bottles that promised the same thing at four times the price difference, with no way to tell them apart. Nothing I read online settled it. The advice was either a ten-step ritual nobody keeps up, or a single miracle product with an affiliate link attached.

So I learned the slow way. I started turning bottles around and reading the INCI list before the front label, noting where an active sat in the order, whether the vehicle suited my skin, and which fragrance and essential-oil ingredients kept turning up in the products that stung. I kept notes on what I used and what actually changed after eight or twelve weeks, which is how long most of this really takes.

What came out of that is the approach behind every page here: few steps, done consistently, with each one earning its place. Cleanser, moisturizer and daily sunscreen do most of the work; one well-chosen active does the rest. If a step cannot be explained in a sentence, it usually does not belong in the routine.

The tone is deliberate too. No urgency, no before-and-after theatre, no claim that a cream will do what a dermatologist does. Calm, plainly-sourced guidance you can act on this evening is the whole point — and where the evidence is genuinely uncertain, the page says so instead of guessing confidently.

Our research method

Each guide starts with the consensus positions of dermatology bodies and peer-reviewed reviews on the ingredient class in question — retinoids, hydroxy acids, niacinamide, ceramides, UV filters. I then screen candidate products on full INCI lists, active concentration where the brand discloses it, vehicle and texture, fragrance and known sensitizers, packaging stability for light-sensitive actives, and price per use. Products I would not use myself do not get named, however good the commission would be.

AI tools help me move through that reading faster: they run literature searches, organise sources, check that outbound links still resolve, and hold a first draft in shape. They do not use products, and they do not decide what is recommended. I perform and direct the research myself, and I read the evidence and the final language before anything is published.

Tools may assist research and drafting — literature searches, link checks, layout, formatting. Every published claim is written, checked against the sources cited on the page, and signed off by Maria Alejandra before it goes live. Nothing is published from an automated draft without that step.

No paid placement

No brand can buy a mention, a ranking, or a kinder verdict here. Nothing on this site is sponsored, gifted-for-coverage, or written to a brand brief. Where a link earns a commission we say so on the page and in the affiliate disclosure, and the commission never decides the order of the picks — a cheaper drugstore product wins whenever it is the better formula for the job. If a product I recommended is reformulated for the worse, the recommendation comes down rather than being quietly left up.

How often content is reviewed

Routine and guide pages carry a visible "last updated" date. I review each core skin-type and concern guide at least once every 12 months and sooner when material evidence, safety guidance or a featured formula changes. I correct verified errors in place and update the page’s review date, so you can always see how current a page is.

How routines are built

Every routine follows the same logic dermatologists use: cleanse, treat, moisturize, protect — with actives sequenced so they don't cancel each other out. Retinoids stay in the evening. Vitamin C and sunscreen stay in the morning. Sensitive and rosacea-prone profiles get lower-irritation swaps automatically. Nothing is added to a routine simply to make it look longer.

How products are chosen

For each step we name a "best overall" pick, a budget pick, and alternates. Selection is based on formulation, published ingredient evidence, texture, and price per use. Brands cannot pay for placement. We link to major retailers so you can compare — some of those links are affiliate links, which is explained in full on our affiliate disclosure page.

Independence and funding

Lumen Ritual is independent and self-funded. No brand pays us for placement, for a "best pick" slot, or for a favorable write-up, and no brand sees a page before it is published. We buy or research the products ourselves.

Picks are chosen on formulation, published ingredient evidence, texture, tolerability, and price — never on commission rate. We routinely recommend drugstore products that earn us less than pricier alternatives, and several of our backup picks earn us nothing at all. If a program's payout changed tomorrow, our recommendations would not.

The site is funded by affiliate links. We participate in the Amazon Services LLC Associates Program; links to every other retailer are unmonetized. Full detail is on the affiliate disclosure page.

Our Expertise

I write and maintain Lumen Ritual myself. I am a long-time skincare researcher and enthusiast rather than a clinician. My background is in reading and summarising the primary literature: peer-reviewed dermatology journals, ingredient monographs, regulatory guidance on sunscreen and actives, and manufacturer formulation data. I trace every claim published here back to that kind of source before it reaches a guide.

The routine builder is not a random product picker. Its logic encodes evidence-based practice: cleanse-to-occlusive layering order, thin-to-thick application, once-daily retinoid introduction with buffering and slow ramp-up, separation of pH-sensitive or irritation-stacking actives, broad-spectrum SPF as a non-negotiable morning step, and hard guardrails for pregnancy, teen and sensitised skin. Each recommendation is matched to your answers by skin type, concern, tolerance and budget, then checked against a conflict list before it is shown.

Products are chosen on formulation and published evidence for their key ingredients, and the picks are re-checked as formulas change. Affiliate relationships never influence which product appears first.

What this site is not

We are not dermatologists or medical professionals. If you have persistent skin issues, please consult a qualified healthcare provider. Lumen Ritual publishes general skincare information. It is not medical advice and it cannot diagnose a skin condition. Persistent acne, rosacea, eczema, or sudden changes in your skin are worth a dermatologist's opinion.
