Head to head

Adapalene vs retinol: which retinoid should you start with?

The short answer

Start with adapalene 0.1% if blackheads, closed comedones and clogged pores are the problem, because it acts directly on the pore lining without needing conversion. Choose retinol if your goal is texture, fine lines and general renewal on skin that has never used a retinoid.

How to use adapalene gel

The detail

Can you use both?

There is no reason to. They occupy the same slot in a routine and stacking them multiplies irritation without multiplying results. Pick one, use it consistently for twelve weeks, then reassess.

What does the ramp-up look like?

Every third night for two weeks, every other night for two weeks, then nightly only if your skin stays calm. Dry or sensitive skin should hold at two nights a week for longer and use the moisturizer sandwich.

Do both need sunscreen?

Yes. Both increase photosensitivity, both belong in the evening routine only, and both need broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every morning to hold on to results.

Common questions

Is adapalene stronger than retinol?

Functionally, yes. Adapalene binds retinoid receptors directly, while retinol has to be converted by the skin in two steps, so a given percentage of adapalene does more work than the same percentage of retinol.

Which one causes more purging?

Adapalene, typically. Because it clears the pore lining quickly, congestion that was already forming surfaces sooner, usually between weeks two and six.

Can beginners start with adapalene?

Yes, at a pea-sized amount every third night with moisturizer on top. Adapalene is over the counter for exactly this reason; the caution is frequency, not the ingredient itself.
