Ingredient pairings

Can you use retinol with AHA or BHA?

The short answer

Not in the same routine. Both speed up cell turnover, so stacking them strips the barrier faster than it rebuilds. Use the exfoliant on one night and the retinoid on another, with at least 24 hours between them.

The verdict

Retinol + AHA: Use on alternate nights

How to run it
Exfoliant one night, retinoid another. Never the same night.
Waiting time
At least 24 hours between them.

Both increase cell turnover. Stacked in one night they strip the barrier faster than it rebuilds, which reads as sensitivity, flaking and stinging within a week.

What the week looks like

WhenWhat to apply
Night 1Exfoliant (AHA or BHA) on dry skin, wait 5 minutes, then moisturizer
Night 2Retinoid on dry skin, wait 10–20 minutes, then moisturizer
Night 3Recovery: hydrating serum and a richer moisturizer, nothing active
Night 4Recovery again, then repeat the cycle
Every morningGentle cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen — non-negotiable on this schedule

Who should skip this combination

Skip this pairing altogether if your skin is already stinging, flaking or tight. Repair the barrier for two weeks first.

Whatever the pairing, the order of the rest of your routine still applies. The step-order checker sequences the products you own, and the pairing checker covers any other two ingredients you are weighing up.

Common questions

What happens if I use retinol and glycolic acid together?
Usually redness, stinging and flaking within a few days. It is not dangerous, but the irritation undoes the results you were after.
How many nights apart should they be?
At least one full night. The four-night skin cycling rotation — exfoliate, retinoid, recover, recover — is the easiest way to keep both.
Is a salicylic acid cleanser the same problem?
Less so. A cleanser is rinsed off after a minute, so oily and resilient skin can often use one on retinoid nights. Leave-on exfoliants still need their own night.
