Ingredient pairings

Can you use benzoyl peroxide with retinol?

The short answer

Alternate them. Benzoyl peroxide can oxidise older retinol formulas and the pair is drying enough to trigger peeling. Adapalene is the exception: it is stable with benzoyl peroxide and the two are a standard acne combination, usually benzoyl peroxide in the morning and adapalene at night.

The verdict

Benzoyl peroxide + Retinol: Use on alternate nights

How to run it
Benzoyl peroxide in the morning or on alternate nights; retinoid on its own nights.
Waiting time
At least 12 hours apart.

Benzoyl peroxide can oxidise older retinol formulas, and together they are drying enough to trigger the peeling that makes people quit. Adapalene is the exception — it is stable with benzoyl peroxide, and the pair is a standard acne combination.

What the week looks like

WhenWhat to apply
MorningGentle cleanser, benzoyl peroxide wash or leave-on, moisturizer, sunscreen
Night 1Cleanser, retinoid or adapalene on dry skin, wait 10–20 minutes, moisturizer
Night 2Recovery: cleanser, hydrating serum, moisturizer
WeeklyTwo to three retinoid nights while you build tolerance, then increase slowly

Who should skip this combination

Not for pregnancy or breastfeeding — the retinoid half is off the table. Benzoyl peroxide alone is generally considered acceptable, but check with your clinician.

Whatever the pairing, the order of the rest of your routine still applies. The step-order checker sequences the products you own, and the pairing checker covers any other two ingredients you are weighing up.

Common questions

Does benzoyl peroxide deactivate retinol?
It can oxidise older retinol and tretinoin formulas when layered directly. Adapalene is chemically stable with it, which is why the combination is sold as a single prescription product in some countries.
Can I use them at the same time of day?
Only with adapalene, and only if your skin is comfortable. For everything else, keep at least 12 hours between them.
Why is my skin peeling on both?
Too much, too soon. Drop to benzoyl peroxide two mornings a week and the retinoid two nights, and hold there until the flaking stops.
